    New Handcarved Bullroarer
    Direct from Artist
    Made from reclaimed wood
The Bullroarer is an Aboriginal ceremonial instrument consisting of a rhomboid piece of wood covered in traditional designs. By holding the long string, which passes through a hole at one end, and spinning the Bullroarer in circles over your head, it twirls through the air, creating a unique, eerie sound, like a swarm of winged insects. Great fun to play, just make sure that you're in an open space! 14" long, oval in form and tapered at each end, this bullroarer spins up the fastest and is the most sensitive, loudest model I make. Individually carved with abstract geometric designs filled with white pigment. If only have room in your kit for one bullroarer, get this one!
Each bullroarer has different carving, these are an example of what they will look like not the exact item you are buying.
The carvings are more than decorative. They help disturb the air currents around the bullroarer so it spins up faster, kind of like dimples on a golf ball. Smooth painted ones aren't as responsive.
Free continental US shipping. I will ship internationally for an additional cost.
If you heard a Bullroarer in a movie, and want something that sounds like that, check out my Windwands. That is most likely what was recorded!
Some people have asked if Bullroarers were used for signaling. To the best of my knowledge, no, they never were, except maybe in a movie. They just aren't that loud. Early people weren't stupid. They would would just yell.
My Bullroarers use a braided nylon line for the string. Traditionally they would use twisted hair or fibers. That might actually be better, since the winding and unwinding of the string determines the sensitivity and quickness of the bullroarer, but I am not doing that for safety reasons.
These also look awesome just hanging in a garden or patio. They just twirl gently in the wind and are visually interesting.
All the instruments I list are hand made by me. I have been building and distributing musical instruments 20+ years. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me
